Wheelchair Power Assistance

Wheelchair Power Assistance

This is a really useful electric helper for carers of those in wheelchairs who do not have a fully electric wheelchair, but can also assist those who can manually self propel. The single wheel fits neatly underneath the wheelchair and has a batttery pack which is no larger than a small flask. It comes with its own carry bag. The battery pack is not heavy and can be easily removed for charging.

Although a bit hit and miss on gravel and grass (the wheel can slip), generally it is a great helper for long walks, gradients such as ramps, and those long hills which can prove a real work out! The great thing about this piece of kit is that the wheel is in free-wheel mode when the power is removed - it won't lock up when you take the power off. If you need this fifth wheel out of the way, simply lift it up using the hook and strap provided.

There are three speeds, I would call these strolling, normal walking, and power walking or slow jogging. The kit we have was kindly provided by a local charity and was fitted on a number of wheelchairs. The feedback from parents and care-givers has been extremely positive. Sadly, like all equipment of this type , they do not come cheap at around £1,450 per unit but the charity managed to negotiate a good price for 10+ units. These 'Impulse R2' units  are supplied by equipment firm 'Sunrise Medical'. It is worth exploring local funding options to get one of these extremely useful little helpers.
